Download the area you need while your Suunto Race is charging and connected to Wi-Fi, then open the map on the watch before you leave. The watch can display downloaded maps without your phone. If you see only a breadcrumb trail during an activity, check whether the activity's Map setting is Off before assuming the download failed.
Download at home, not at the trailhead
Start with the place you will actually visit. Our recommendation is to download one relevant area and confirm it works before adding a long queue of regions. For a weekend away, make this part of packing: charge the watch, prepare the map and check the activity settings together.
The original Race manual links to Suunto's download instructions. The process uses a direct connection between the watch and a wireless network; pairing your phone is not itself proof that the map has reached the watch. Keep that distinction in mind when troubleshooting.

Set up the connection and choose an area
Following those instructions:
- With the app and watch updated and paired, enable Wireless network. Disable Airplane mode and Power saving.
- Connect the charger to power. In the app's watch tab, open Wireless networks and add a network you can use.
- Open Offline maps, choose the country and area, and select the download-to-watch option.
- Leave the watch charging within Wi-Fi range until it reports completion.
Restore power and Wi-Fi after an interruption. Suunto says downloads resume; if the transfer remains stuck, its support page suggests canceling it in the app and restarting.

Make the map visible during an activity
On the original Race, select a GPS sport mode, open its Map setting and choose a map style before starting. During the activity, use the middle button to reach the map display. Suunto says selecting Off leaves a breadcrumb trail instead of the map. You can also open Map from the watch's menu without starting an exercise.
For your first check, choose somewhere familiar. Look for recognizable surrounding detail, then practice zooming and moving around the display. This is a more useful readiness check than seeing a completed progress bar in the app: it confirms you know where to find the feature when you need it.

Diagnose the symptom you actually see
| What you see | First thing to check | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Download stops after unplugging | Charger connection | Reconnect power and let the transfer resume |
| Download stops away from the router | Watch's Wi-Fi connection | Return to range and confirm the connection |
| Activity shows a trail without surrounding map detail | Activity Map setting | If Off, choose a map style |
| Map controls do not respond | Button lock | Check the lock state before suspecting broken controls |
The last row comes from the Race manual: button lock prevents the map's button and touch interactions. These checks separate a transfer problem from a display or controls problem; they are not a promise to resolve every fault.
Do you need another watch?
Not simply because your first download stalled. If you already own a Race, complete this setup and a familiar local trial before shopping for a replacement. These instructions concern the original Race; do not assume another model has identical menus or navigation features.
For a long recording, also read our Suunto Race battery-mode guide. If you are still choosing a watch, the Suunto brand guide provides buying context. This is researched setup guidance, not a navigation field test.
