MPB condition grades: is “Like new” worth paying for?

THE QUICK ANSWER

Pay extra for a cleaner cosmetic grade when appearance matters enough to you to justify the difference. Otherwise, a lower cosmetic grade can belong on your shortlist—but only after you read that individual item's notes, photos and included accessories. The grade is not a substitute for comparing the complete listing.

What the grade tells you

MPB US lists cosmetic grades alongside individual observations and accessories; its guidance also uses shutter counts for cameras. A grade is therefore useful context, but it is not a prediction of remaining service life. Its descriptions range from little visible wear in Like new to progressively more wear in Excellent, Good, Well used and Heavily used. The same help page separately identifies Spares & Repairs items as dysfunctional equipment that retains repair or parts value. Do not treat that category as an ordinary bargain camera ready for your next trip.

Our recommendation is to decide what appearance you can live with before sorting by price. If scratches would bother you every time you picked up the camera, paying for a cleaner example may be reasonable. If you mainly want a tool to carry and use, cosmetics may rank below other requirements.

Compare two actual items

MPB gives each item its own SKU, photographs and accessory list. Two bodies of the same camera model can therefore arrive with different batteries or chargers. Read the individual listing rather than assuming the model name describes everything in the box.

Listing detailWhat to do with it
Individual photographsLook at the areas you will handle and view often
Additional observationsDecide whether the specific limitation affects your intended use
Included battery and chargerWork out whether the item is usable with what you already own
Shutter count, when suppliedCompare the usage information alongside the rest of the listing
Cosmetic gradeDecide whether the appearance difference is worth paying for

A better choice than simply picking the top grade

Suppose you are choosing between a cleaner body with an accessory you would need to replace and a visibly worn body supplied with the equipment you need. There is no need to invent a price formula: first decide whether both listings meet your functional requirements, then compare their actual all-in costs and how much you value the appearance difference.

If a note is ambiguous, ask MPB about that SKU before buying. Keep the question specific: “Does this observation affect the function I intend to use?” is more useful than asking whether the camera is good.

MPB describes checks covering controls, sensor condition, autofocus and other functions during its evaluation process. Those checks are useful context, but cannot guarantee the future life of an individual used item.

Does Like new mean every original accessory is included?

No. MPB says accessory contents are listed separately; a clean cosmetic grade does not establish a complete original bundle. Use the individual contents list before placing the order.
